Does Insurance Cover Naturopathic Care in Washington State?
Most patients are surprised to learn that naturopathic care isn’t just covered by insurance in Washington State, it’s required to be covered. Washington has an “every provider mandate” law that requires insurance companies operating in Washington to cover all state-licensed healthcare providers. Since naturopathic doctors are licensed primary care physicians in Washington, your insurance plan must cover our services the same way it covers any other primary care visit.

What Does Insurance Cover?
Coverage varies by plan, but most patients with in-network insurance can expect:
New patient visits — covered at your in-network primary care copay or deductible rate. Our new patient visits are 60 minutes.
Follow-up visits — covered at your standard primary care rate.
Lab work — most labs we order are covered when medically indicated, billed through your insurance by the lab itself, the same as any other physician. Even if you don’t have ND insurance coverage, your labs are often covered because LabCorp or Quest, our 2 main labs we use, accept your insurance.
Prescriptions — our NDs have full prescriptive authority in Washington State. Prescriptions are filled at any pharmacy and billed through your pharmacy benefit.
Virtual visits — telehealth visits are covered by most Washington plans statewide.
Note: Specialty testing such as comprehensive stool analysis, SIBO breath testing, or micronutrient panels may be a higher out of pocket expense. We’ll always discuss costs before ordering.
What if I Have a High Deductible Plan?
If you haven’t met your deductible yet, you’ll pay our contracted rate directly until it’s satisfied, after which insurance covers the remainder. Our contracted rates are significantly lower than our cash pay rates, so being in-network saves you money even before your deductible is met.
Can I Use My HSA or FSA?
Yes — naturopathic doctor services are qualified medical expenses. You can use HSA and FSA funds for visits, lab work, and many prescribed supplements.
How to Verify Your Benefits
