Visceral Manipulation – An original approach to visceral pain and GI upset

Visceral manipulation is a gentle manual technique used to mobilize and improve function of internal organs in the body. Restrictions in movement can cause pain, this includes restrictions in organ movements as well. Visceral manipulation can restore motion, fluidity, and mobility by releasing restrictions. A healthy living system must have motion to function; loss of motion equates to loss of function, so restoring motion can restore function.

What causes restrictions?

Restrictions in movements can be multifactorial, often relating to myofascial patterns, tissue compression, posture, nervous system qualities, tension, emotions, spinous mobility, and trauma. Body tissues and organs that lose motion are restricted and can cause inflammation and pain. Pain referred from organs to other parts of the body is seen in various referral patterns.

What to expect

During a visceral manipulation treatment, a practitioner uses specific placement and movements to encourage organs to return to their optimal position. It is a non-invasive therapy where gentle hand placement is used to help release restrictions and adhesions. The primary locations include the abdomen, thorax, and pelvis. During a session, the main areas worked on are the abdomen, chest, and pelvis. Many people feel relaxed and may even doze off. You might also notice sounds like gurgling in your stomach, along with tingling, warmth, or gentle movements. Sessions usually last about an hour,

Who would benefit

Along with naturopathic medicine, visceral manipulation can benefit a variety of people, including those with:

  1. Digestive disorders such as bloating, constipation, or irritable bowels
  2. Pelvic pain conditions like endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease
  3. Post-surgical adhesion
  4. Musculoskeletal pain
  5. Posture issues and chronic tension
  6. Headaches or migraines
  7. Fibromyalgia
  8. Stress and tension
  9. Visceral and GI pain and IBS

Visceral manipulation aims to improve mobility and function of digestive organs, reduce tension and restrictions (such as those in pelvic organs and surrounding tissues), decrease adhesions, and improve organ function. Stress reduction is an additional benefit as the nervous system heavily resides in the organs in and around the gut as well.

Overall, visceral manipulation is intended to improve mobility, alignment, and function of internal organs, which can extend to have a positive impact on overall health and wellbeing.
